About Neck and Shoulder pain

Neck and shoulder pain is a common complaint and troubling problem. Neck pain is discomfort in any of the structures in the neck. Shoulder pain occurs in and around the shoulder joint. Neck and shoulder both are susceptible to injury. Neck pain also known as cervical pain can be associated with headache and facial pain. It can also cause shoulder pain, and numbness or tingling sensation in arms and fingers. Shoulder pain makes it difficult or rather impossible for you to raise your arm above shoulder level.  Some people experience only neck pain or only shoulder pain, while others experience pain in both areas.

If you have shoulder pain, some common causes include bursitis or rotator cuff tendonitis, rotator cuff tear, frozen shoulder, dislocation of shoulder joint, instability, strains from overexertion. Other causes of shoulder pain are injury to the joints and long term or chronic compression of the muscle as with dresses that does not fit right. Other than having shoulder pain, you can also experience pain in your neck. Non-specific neck and shoulder pain is commonly experienced by both adolescents and adults. The pain is usually either acute (lasting up to 3 weeks duration) or chronic (lasting for more than 12 weeks) in nature.

Pain can also occur in the shoulder from diseases or conditions that involve the shoulder joint, the soft tissues and bones surrounding the shoulder, or the nerves that supply sensation to the shoulder area. Constant chronic elevation of the shoulders as in holding a phone without proper elbow support or sitting in a chair without proper armrests can worsen your shoulder pain. Furthermore, poor posture while sitting or standing, watching TV or reading, bending over a desk for hours, placing your computer monitor too high or too low, sleeping in an uncomfortable position, twisting or turning the neck in a jarring manner while exercising can also be the reason for your neck and shoulder pain.

Diagnosing the neck and shoulder is needed to know the actual point and degree of pain. X-rays can be helpful in diagnosing your pain. MRI, EMG and NCV also might aid in this case. Analysis of the neck and shoulder posture is essential to detect the abnormal movements and posture of neck, shoulder blade, clavicle, shoulder and arm.

Managing and relieving your pain by practicing shoulder pain exercises is a simple step you can take to ease your aches and pains.
