Natural arthritis remedies: Yoga researches

According to a randomized controlled trial done on 250 patients, natural arthritis remedies through yoga therapy is better than physiotherapy exercises as an adjunct to transcutaneous electrical stimulation and ultrasound treatment in reducing pain, morning stiffness, state and trait anxiety, blood pressure and pulse rate(1), in improving functional disability and quality of life(2) and in reducing walking pain, range of knee flexion, walking time, tenderness, swelling, crepitus, and knee disability in patients with osteoarthritis knees(3).

In another pilot study, 11 deconditioned subjects who had been clinically diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the knee experienced some relief from symptoms once they started exercises. After 8 weeks in a modified Iyengar yoga class that met just once per week, all of the subjects showed a reduction in knee pain stiffness.

Another single group study conducted by Patanjali Research Foundation, indicated that a brief intensive yoga program was beneficial in rheumatoid arthritis, with decreased disability, better functionality and changes in the rheumatoid factor levels suggesting improvement with natural arthritis remedies(5).

One review paper published in arthritis journal suggests that CAM mind-body exercises-Tai Chi, qigong, and yoga-for osteoarthritis management and evaluates their benefits in pain reduction with natural arthritis remedies, muscle strength, physical function, stiffness, balance, fear of falling, self-efficacy, quality of life, and psychological outcomes in patients with osteoarthritis, based on randomized controlled trials published(6).

Causes of arthritis

The causes of arthritis depend on the form of arthritis. Causes include age, obesity, injury (leading to osteoarthritis), metabolic abnormalities (such as gout and pseudogout), hereditary factors, the direct and indirect effect of infections (bacterial and viral), and a misdirected immune system with autoimmunity (such as in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus).

Signs and symptoms of arthritis

• Swelling and stiffness of joints

• Tenderness

• Inability to work/walk

• Muscle pain with weakness

• Nonspecific fever

• Weight loss

• Fatigue

• Poor sleep

• Physical discomfort
